History of the Brest border group

In 1944, the Red Army launched broad offensive operations. Its powerful strikes against the enemy followed one after another along the entire front from the Barents to the Black Seas, as a result of which it reached the state border of the USSR.

The question arose of taking the state border under the protection of border troops. Initially, it was supposed to use for this purpose the border regiments guarding the rear active army... But then they agreed on something else: to form new detachments to guard the state border. For this, a part of the command and enlisted personnel was allocated from the border guards of the rear and regular troops, as well as from the troops of the southern and eastern borders.

By order of the Main Directorate of the Border Troops of the NKVD, in the period from April 25 to May 1, 1944, east of the city of Chita, in the area of Lake Kenon and the Kadala station, the 86th separate border detachment was formed from the personnel of the Trans-Baikal Border District units to be sent to the western border of the USSR, in district of the city of Brest.

The formation of the detachment was entrusted to Colonel Fyodor Vrublevsky, a participant in the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars.

On August 15, 1944, the detachment arrived in Brest, and on September 11, 1944, on behalf of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, it was awarded the Battle Banner.

By the end of 1944, the length of the guarded sections of the border by troops was equal to: for the border outpost - about 3.9 km, for the commandant's office - about 16 km.

The main tasks, as well as the procedure for protecting the border (border line), were also determined by instructions to the border troops on the protection of the border line between the USSR and Poland. The practical application of the border regulations in force had some peculiarities. Their essence was that it was required to establish reliable communication and interaction with units of the Red Army and the NKVD troops to protect the rear of the active Red Army located in the areas of border detachments, both on the territory of Belarus and on the territory of Poland, and later with those who arrived. units of the Polish Army.

When the violators broke through the border, the border detachments were allowed to pursue them in hot pursuit on the territory of Poland, informing the closest commander of the garrison on the adjacent side. A lot of work was done to mark the state border line on the terrain, temporary signs were installed, and 4 m wide glades were cut through the forest sections of the border for the movement of border guards.
