Ilya Alexandrovich Chistyakov was born in Leningrad in 1961.

In the distant 90s, several teachers of mathematics, physics, programming were concerned that the slim system of the Olympiad began to give obvious failures. First, many children simply stopped participating and slipped past this Sita. Secondly, the qualities that the olympodians possess are not identical to the qualities of the scientist, and we lost students who have unconditional mathematical and natural science abilities, but nevertheless did not show themselves. We understood that in the world there is a very serious alternative to this system - scientific competitions for high school students. In particular, there is such a global ISEF contest, which annually collects about three million participants. We wanted to build such a contest in our country, in which children with scientific thinking could participate.

Competition emerged in 2004. This coincided with the fact that the laboratory, that is, a scientific center, which is one of the suppliers of strong work on the All-Russian competitions, by that time became very famous in this environment. About twenty of our students by that time became winners, winners of the world's largest competitions. Three people were even allocated as particularly distinguished. At the competition, they received senior awards, including the Grand Prix, that is, a premium for an outstanding contribution to science. By decision NASA, the names of these students called small planets of the solar system. That is, they already in childhood very seriously advanced themselves. In the future it turned out that it is correct. One of the then winners now received a premium as the best young mathematician of St. Petersburg. The main thing is that they subsequently remained in Russia.

What is the competition?

The Baltic Research Engineering Competition is a fair of scientific projects. Any high school student can take part in it. Many studies will become the basis of coursework, thesis, maybe a candidate thesis. The format of the competition is such that we can invite no more than 400 works, that is, about 600 participants. A child in a well-made registration system sends information about himself, theses and full text of work.

Unlike many contests, we admit to the participation of only the person who provides us with the whole work. In theses, you can still see, having an experienced supervisor. Complete work misled anyone, especially since the expert is appointed in a particular direction. Petersburg is an academic center, so we can find a reviewer practically on any subject. We have seven directions: mathematics, physics, computer sciences, biology, ecology, chemistry, technique. Work, with the positive conclusion of the expert, is invited to the competition. The child comes here along with his supervisor, teacher or accompanying face and presents his project. He draws up the stand on which he talks about his research. For eight hours, it is near the stand and answers all questions. To one person during the competition, up to 30-40 people from the jury can come up. The speaker is spinning, as already in a frying pan, because if the work is not written independently, it will understand.

Who is part of the jury?

In addition to scientific experts, we have a teacher jury, which consists of experienced teachers. We want the ideas of scientific creativity to penetrate the teacher's environment. These experts have completely different evaluation criteria. They look at the dynamics. A child from a distant village is understandable, cannot write work on a homologous algebra, however, it can put a task that is solved on the knee, but still there is his originality of thinking. Such children will definitely support.

The youth jury is former graduates, the winners of the Baltic Competition, who themselves once stood in these stands. They have completely different evaluation criteria. In addition, there is a business jury. The guys are very important that the head of a large company can easily come to them. Imagine, the entrepreneur will stand at the stand and talk for a long time. Then the child will understand that adults are not indifferent to his first steps in science. This support certainly stimulates further to even more interesting creativity, choosing a specialty.

What principle do you choose the winners?

Almost every work that is invited to the contest will be awarded something. This is the quality of the work of the examination. The main lack of children's competitions that I know is that they blindly follow ministerial instructions, and award some part of the participants. We are completely free and reward those whom we consider it necessary. Guys are involved from 40-60 regions of the country. Every section is headed by a professor with a world name, which organizes the work of the jury and the discussion of projects. One way or another, he ranks projects on nominations. The main prize at the competition is a crystal ball "Perfection as Hope." Get it very prestigious. We really believe that the winner will become perfection: a major scientist, researcher, organizer, businessman. We have section prizes, special premiums who award each jury, we have awards of foreign scientific societies. It is forced to say that, unfortunately, in Russia, public organizations cannot or do not want to support such contests.

Does the state support you?

I think that the competition is a brilliant perspective, but we still cannot find financial support from state structures. At all. It's strange: in words, all of course agree, but when the will should be shown, no one supports. They themselves released Gina from the bottle when they said that the initiative should go from below. What topics guys do projects?

In this case, what regions work well?

Ivanovo, Chelyabinsk, Irkutsk, Anadyr, Chukotka, Belarus. We have a lot of Ukrainians this year. That is, the guys from the north-west of Ukraine are going to demonstrate their work, no matter what. We have traditionally Silen Kazakhstan. We have long been a contest of the work of the CIS. All the best are brought to Petersburg, because it is a scientific Mecca. The opinion of our jury is very expensive for those who work and achieve results. We received several dozen research from St. Petersburg and as a scientific literature, which was the basis, "Wikipedia". Such work, besides pity, nothing causes anything. And regions work!

How do you give premiums?

We do not want to miss a single schoolchildren with the "Spark God." If our experts see that in the child the spirit of creativity is strong, we will definitely invite you. The section is obtained dissimilar, but interesting. Guys after the day of the competition at the competition, where to "sell" their project: to convince, to interest - just fall without power. We have section prizes - a small crystal ball. We have the main award - a trip to the final of the ISEF contest. In addition, there is a business community award. Lot. Successfully participate. There are sections in which girls are most: biology, ecology. The chemical section is fifty-fifty. There are boyish directions: programming, mathematics, physics. In the technique of boys more, but we have such a specific technique: a deal with the ability to solder, build. According to statistics, approximately 40% of girls and 60% of boys are involved.

Tell us about the laboratory of continuous mathematical education. What is its main idea?

The idea of \u200b\u200bthe laboratory is to look for motivated young people. We proceed from the following thesis: children ripen in different ways at different times. One already in grade 8, you can tell the meaningful course, the other is not ready to perceive the 11th grade, and will find himself in high school. We want to come to us the guys who in adolescence felt the beauty of independent activities. And we do not even confuse that they do not know something. Why are we needed if the child knows everything without us? We just know how to form such guys, teach and very correctly start with scientific activities with them, because for such a person who is still doubtful, tries, it is very important that his first activity is successful. Otherwise, it may forever turn the child from classes.

The Mathematical School is not the one called Mathematical, and that where graduates go on matms and become mathematicians. We have such - up to two thirds of the class. Many schools of this direction turned into technical, because most graduates go to technical universities. Now the St. Petersburg mathematical society was awarded about thirty prizes of Rochlin, of which our graduates received more than a third. A small school in the number of graduates is bypassed all the giants: the presidential lyceum is far behind and the governor. They do not make up any competition.

How is the process of classes in the laboratory organized?

The child begins to go to the seminars, then work with the supervisor and ends with research. But this is not an end in itself. For us, the main thing is that the work is not an accident. We love the study to be associated with long-term preparation and study of the material. We have developed programs and approved them. We will organize our work within the framework of public-private partnership. Children learn, gain knowledge as part of a secondary school and in our center: at seminars and additional classes. When released, the child receives a state certificate about those courses that it has passed from us. The document from this year will take universities. Those graduates who are now graduate studies are underway with the guys who are just beginning to learn in LNM. Young candidates of sciences are engaged with eleventh graders. So there is a continuous education. Each next step is not in antagonistic contradictions with the previous one. We do not say: forget everything that you have studied before. On the contrary, when the schoolboy comes to the university, he knows why he came, he understands what he needs.

That is, you collect talents?

Sure. We want to create conditions for talents. We introduce young talents with already implemented. It is very important that the guys seen the success. They meet graduates and understand that, for example, in 24, a person has a company that he himself built on innovative principles, which already in 40 countries of the world has branches. Or they see that one of our graduates brilliantly defended his dissertation and now in the highest normal school in Paris. Another than one of our graduate has a Gazprom grant. He, being a student, and receiving 1200 rubles of scholarships, has about 50 thousand additionally. Agree, the boy in 19 years will live for this money. Schoolchildren see that all the guys are in demand, everything in case, and they like it. We show this image of successful youth, this is the most important thing. This is stronger than any propaganda.

Do you have paid training?

In order to do everything that we want, we must be a legal entity and pay taxes. Parents pay, but if some parent of a student from a general education school wants the child to engage in English, it will cost exactly as much as we take. We added to them 14 extra hours - 2 hours of scientific work and 12 seminars. If they were implemented in the state school, they would pay 5-6 times more. We live at the expense of charity won grants, our intelligence, products that we create, and far from the parental. All large families are released from payment. Moreover, if, for example, parents lost work, we instantly react: they write a statement, and we are learning for free.

What problems is the laboratory?

For example, officials do not want to give us the status of a socially significant institution so that we have a low taxation coefficient.

Why?

They believe that we do not make such big things. I have been told: if you were learning migrant workers from the market, it would be another thing. Stupidity I often hear: you have wonderful children, anyone will cope with them. First, anyone will not cope. Secondly, if the teacher does not work, then whatever money you have paid money, it will not work anyway, but will only demand. The professional community is corrupted. There are schools, where, after an hour of day, dark windows, despite all surcharges.

In addition, we have many other social problems. For example, state existence on the publication of textbooks. It is clear that children, motivated to science, can not learn from basic textbooks that thinst sheet paper by volume. And additional literature costs completely different money. Professional set in physics costs up to 8 thousand rubles per person. We give it for free. Each student receives a set of 40-50 textbooks, and its cost can reach 60 thousand. Parents do not pay for it. True, it was all the years it was created when we had opportunities for grants. We, thanks to the activities of the Mindreat, can not purchase textbooks on budget money, because the list of books that are permitted is strictly fixed. We can not choose anything, these books are not suitable for us, so we are forced either themselves write textbooks and publish them or buy them quite at other prices.

Very big problems cause social security. Disgrace, what is being done in school canteens and in sports activities. Added an extra hour of physical education, but if there are no conditions for its holding, this is an extra hour of physical blessing. I would build some more laboratories. We have a huge number of children want to do experimental physics. We can not do this, because just physically no place. Despite the presence of schools in old areas, allocate separate building officials do not want us.

Of course, the biggest problem is a change in the mentality of the bureaucratism. You used to contact, you say: "The children think badly, the examples decide badly!". The official dismissed: "Eh, yes!", And now they say: "And then see how they dance!" This is the destruction of the value of our education! Now children come who gained knowledge on new standards: they heard about everyone, they read on the Internet, the reports did, they wrote abstracts, but they do not know how to make anything. We must develop our own techniques that will be better and better than Western.

About lectures

About science

The concept, uniting common, additional education and science, was born with me and my colleagues in the Palace of Pioneers in the 90s. Then there were many talented schoolchildren who had little to learn from the school program, they wanted something more. We have become for mathematicians to make scientific seminars and special courses, having developed a special approach to teaching, not allowing to solve problems, obeying a well-known algorithm.

About system

In our system, the main thing was the theory, the study of complex mathematical concepts, the analysis of complex books with an explanation before the audience's interested. It turned out that all this is set and schoolchildren. And the guys began to create real scientific research. Then it turned into a whole system, when we began to find interesting teachers of school disciplines, recommend their director of the school, in which we worked, complement the education of the guys in special occupations in mathematics, physics, programming and offering the children complex, but satisfied topics for scientific research.

About laboratory

In 1992, a laboratory of continuous mathematical education (LMO) was born - this is a school that works on the principle of network interaction of institutions of different styles in order to prepare future scientists, mathematicians. At first, I taught one class in such a system for three years, since 2002 we began to make a set of guys in 8-9 class every year. And at the same time, our loud victories began. Since 2002, LMM has prepared 29 winners of the worldview competition of scientific and engineering achievements of Intel ISEF schoolchildren and more than 50 finalists. This competition is also called the "small nobel". I do not know whether there are still schools, where graduates about 400 people, among them up to 20 students, they won annually at scientific competitions, about 40 became candidates of sciences, from some classes half of the graduates entered the graduate school.

In other words, thanks to the original organizational training model, we managed to bring up a whole pleiad of young mathematician scientists. Since they are constantly involved in our projects, lead schoolchildren work, they rarely leave the country.

About difficulties

Another eight years ago, the position of my graduates was very heavy. One of the graduates of LMO, preparing the dissertation and studying in graduate school, he read lectures on functional analysis in one of the most famous St. Petersburg universities, to receive only about 5 thousand rubles for half of the rates. Diseases, disappointment, the need to help the family - all this very oppressed. He did not want to leave, but a favorable invitation to Sweden was received - and he, married, went there to work at the Department. Now, most of my graduates remain working in the laboratory named after P.L. Chebyshev, are arranged in large research institutes (the Krylovsky Institute, for example), receive grants. They really became in demand here, have a rich circle of scientific communication. It's a shame that the support of the guys began to receive not so long ago, but it's nice that we did not miss them and sent them in time into science.

About upbringing

It is upset that the state continues to support the top of the iceberg - the established scientists, the winners of All-Russian and international olympiads, talented students. But after all, so that they appear, you need to engage in middle, to bring up future scientists with school bench. It turns out that instead of the state we do, although it would be more correct that the state would be invested in high-quality education, would raise the overall level of education, and private structures would support the brightest.

About projects

We make a lot of large-scale projects within our school - All-Russian standing competitions "Baltic Scientific and Engineering Competition", the international tournament of young mathematicians - Command Mathematics Fight to solve research tasks, the city Olympiad to address the research tasks "Non-Stop Mathematics", Summer Mathematics School , Biological contest "Natural selection".
