The poem "Blue Color" (in the original - without a name), written by N. Baratashvili in 1841 and translated by B. Pasternak no later than 1938, has long been in Russia a kind of visiting card of the genius Georgian poet. At the thought of it in memory, the lines "the color of heaven, blue color / loved, from the small years, spontaneously arise. Few people can remember other poems of Baratashvili, but the "blue color" knows all the fans of Russian poetry. Before Pasternak, this poem into Russian shifted V. Gaprindashvili, whose translation saw the light in 1922 in the then Tiflis and, of course, could not walk before the Russian public. In Georgia, Pasternakovsky translation is quite widely known, however, the attitude towards it is not so tremendous than in Russia, but more jealous and preiss. And, I must say, there are foundations for this. But about it below.

Until now, anyone from Russian critics somehow occurred to compare the original "blue" with his translation. The reasons for this, in my opinion, at least three. The first: the genius of Pasternakovsky text, to which I do not want to quit. The second is the reluctance of professional literary criticism to spoil their reputation as criticizing the domestic classic. You can understand them: Georgian language Russian philologists in their overwhelming majority do not know, "blue color" has long been translated, the translation itself is not just a masterpiece, but part of Russian culture. The third reason is the possible absence in the archives of Pasternak that is the substrate, from which the Russian poet translated the poem of the Georgian poet.

Maybe someone will seem not entirely correct to someone, but I intend to make a kind of experience: to compare the translation of Pasternak with a stranger (practically literal) infringement, made at my request by the poetess I. Sadze, because I myself can not boast the knowledge of the Georgian language. And although the submits of the same poem made up by different people at different times may and should vary in something, in the main thing they must still coincide: the language on which the original poem is written, remained the same, sensible dictionaries no one canceled And the possible nuances of meaning in this case are insignificant. Especially despite the approach (I will say, run ahead), who demonstrated Pasternak, joining the Georgian original by Russian verses.

The translated achievements of Pasternak, as the largest Russian translator and the historian of the translation of E. Vitkovsky on its website rightly notices, will never lose their meaning, despite the fact that, say, "Hamlet" in his translation is, rather, "Hamlet" Pasternak than Shakespeare "(http: // vekperevoda. COM / 1887 / PASTERNAK. HTM). Praphrasing another statement of Eugene Vladimirovich, the Pasternak presentation makes believe that "... in the original something is". Moreover, I will add from myself, something very and very significant, not taken into account by the poet, discarded by him as unnecessary, issued for the brackets of the original text. This is especially true of the poem of N. Baratashvili "Blue color".

Penetration into the texts I intend to spend consistently, stanza for the stanza, gradually withdrawing on the pages as the original in its substitutional presentation and the poetic translation. This contradicts the generally accepted practice of correlating the original with its poetic arrangement, but in this case, the departure from it seems necessary, allowing more to carefully understand both in the peculiarities of the original text and in the congeniality of the corresponding interpretation. In the end, experiment so experiment!

When assessing the accuracy and liberation of translation, I decided to take advantage, among other things, by the methodology of the late Russian philologist M. Gasparov, set fired by him in the article "Master and Precision Measure" (Gasparov M. L. About Russian Poetry: Analyzes, Interpretation, Characteristics. - SPb, 2001. - 480 s.; Http: // www. Philology. EN / Linguistics1 / Gasparov-01E.htm). Mikhail Leonovich proposed, according to his expression, "... simple and rude, but it seems, to begin with a rather significant way to measure accuracy: counting the number of significant words (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs), preserved, changed and omitted-added translated compared to the infringement". This commensurate this or that translation with the corresponding confirmist, Gasparov determined "... The accuracy indicator is the proportion of precisely reproduced words from the total number of pilot words; and the indicator of liberty is the share of arbitrarily added words from the total number of translation words (and both - in percent) "able, in his opinion, "... characterize the translation as a whole".

Just by this, I will now go to the ratio of Pasternakovsky translation of the poem Bratashvili "Blue color". Moreover, if Mikhail Leonovich did not take into account the synonyms and synonymic structures used by translators, I, in order not to accuse me in a preissance to Pasternak, I will still take into account them as a significant one. Bold The font highlighted the coincidence of significant words in a setpoint and translating; shaded Words brought by a translator in translation.

Interest (1 stanza) [in square brackets Explanation of the author of the infringement]:

IN heavenly color, blue,

Property color

And unearthly [not from this world]

I S. younost in love.

Translation (1 stanza):

Sky color blue color

Love i S. small years.

IN childhood he is me meant

Blue other started.

Accuracy Indicator: 66.7%, Volost Indicator: 50%. (Hereinafter: intermediate data omitted. Everyone can check the results of computing on their own. If you find any discrepancies, please notify the author of this article for making relevant adjustments.)

Pasternak, on the one hand, handed over the first structure almost congenial - the accuracy rate is quite high; On the other hand, a large amount of discovered in translation. If the source text fell out primeantnesscolors and most color (Used Bratashvili three times, Pasternak twice), then brought from the side - small summer doubling youth original, and attempt to replace this very primeantness Blue expression silence other started . In general, the impression of the translation of the first stanza remains not bad: the meaning in principle was transmitted, and without frankly discovered to present Pasternakovsky translation in general unthinkable. True, Baratashvili in the first lines of the topic only outlines, with some trembling, as it seems to me, reporting that he has long been loved by the unearthly color of heavenly lazaries and the universal primarily. Unlike the Georgian poet, Pasternak confidently takes the bull for the horns, that is, not only declares his love for blue, but also interprets his love for her in the key indicated by me. However, in general, I repeat, Pasternakovsky text of the infringement does not spoil.

Interest (2 stanza):

AND now, when blood

I'm fucked

Klyano - i do not love

Never other color.

Translation (2 stanza):

AND now, when reached

I vershins days their

IN sacrifice other colors

Blue not i will give.

Accuracy Indicator: 44.4%, Volost Indicator: 60%.

The decrease in the first and increasing the second indicators is due to the fact that Pasternak in the first two hundred handed over the metaphor of the original of its own metaphor, and in the second - changed, if you can put it, the direction of love of a lyrical subject: Georgian poet swear not to love other color , Russian - to remain true to the same blue Color. In this case, in my opinion, some explicitness of the Gasparovsky method is manifested: the indicators of accuracy and liberation of translation clearly worsened, while the general Pasternak coped with the transfer of meaning and this stanza (even more than the first). And this, I suppose, and there is the main criterion of translation craft. I am (unlike readers of this article familiar with a confirmist) confuses only a noun victim But I will speak in my place about him.

Interest (3 stanza):

IN eyesin beautiful

I love heavenly color;

It, saturated sky,

Rades delight.

Translation (3 stored):

Accuracy Indicator: 55.6%, Volost Indicator: 44.4%.

Almost the climax moment of deploying text. Despite the fact that, compared with the previous stanza, the accuracy rate increased, and the validity rate fell, it was here that Pasternak resolutely go away from the original, sharply narrowing the pathos of the source text. (Another confirmation is not complete adequacy of the method proposed by Gasparov. However, it would never be a sign of equality between saturation of the sky and by the residue blue As a result, the indicator of the accuracy of the translation of this stanza would decrease, and the frequency indicator would increase. Moreover, the first expression refers to color second - to view .) In the third stubborn, complicated from the point of view of syntax, Baratashvili speaks of love for the eyes of heavenly color, to any blue eyes - to anyone they belonged to any blue eyes. Pasternak is explained in love for warned blue eyes of a concrete person, concrete beloved (" it sight bottomless is yours"). (That is why I did not equate the sacrament loveadjective original favorites translation: it's two differentlove.) Unfortunately, the brightest characteristic fell out of the translation. heavenly colors : is he rades delight, And thanks to enthusiastic blue, turquoise eyes, too, must believe, shine with joy. According to Baratashvili, the owners of blue eyes through the blue, which is enclosed in them, are cheerfully treating everything in essence. And Pasternak draws beautiful blue eyes, losing solely on a lyrical subject. The difference is significant.

Interest (4 stanza):

Duma - dream

Pulls me to the celestial vertices,

So that meltingfrom love [charm],

I merged S. bluecolor.

Translation (4 stanza):

Accuracy Indicator: 33.3%, Volost Indicator: 66.7%.

As they say, the frost is fixed: the accuracy of the translation drops, the liberty is growing rapidly. This is quite understandable: it is from the fourth stanza Pasternak begins to talk about his own voice, and not about what is contained in the original. The text of the translator is associated with the confirmist in just three words (verbal spirits melting I equated nouns solution Otherwise, the connection with the confirmist would decrease in a third). Apparently, here the translator is tired of holding the framework of the source text, and he, translator, what is called, creatively wondered. In the fourth stanza, Baratashvili no longer argues about his beloved blue; The author, inlets into Heaven, the Duma-dream, intends to merge there with her once and for all. But not just merge, but before melting from love. From love - what or to whom? The answer is obvious: to the Divine, to some universal essence, to the Creator, who created heavenly color (color primea - See the first storm), leading the author in a kind of ecstasy. While Pasternak is firmly standing on Earth and, looking up, reflects on what, in his opinion (and not, in the opinion of the author of the original), is Xerey: color dreams lyrical subject , paint heights , Circuit earth spacious . But the arguments about the superior turquoise, I repeat, no longer interested in the awakening spiritually Baratashvili: fascinated by the azure, he dreams of full dissolution in it, in other words - with the Deity itself. It is in this place that the reader begins to vaguely guess: is it no prayer? And for a positive response to this question, as will be seen from further presentation, there are good grounds. But continue.

Interest (5 stanza):

Umna - I will not see

Tears i am native

Instead sky blue

Spirind me dew in heaven.

Translation (5 stored):

Accuracy Indicator: 11.1%, Volost Indicator: 85.7%.

The result is stunning. It does not have to talk about the accuracy at all, since the translation does not have an almost no relation to the confirmist. All the momentous words from it are thrown out and replaced by the translator to their own. The case in the translation practice of the twentieth century is almost unique. Baratashvili speaks sadness about his death, that he, dying and sprinkling with heavenly blue, having made a spiritual essence, will not see any tear, shedd by him with his own (close) to him - in spirit - man; But the poet is ready to reconcile with it, because he is sure - his favorite blue sky okropit(sanctify) heavenlyhis dust. Pasternak, following the old tradition, to depict the poet with an unhappy, poor, early deceased, undeservedly forgotten, argues about the funeral of a lyrical subject, about its full disappearance (in the lingerie confirmation, it is dissolved or intended to dissolve in Divine Lazuri) and about a relative, mourning deceased. But in the case of Baratashvili, talking about his close in such a context is hardly legitimate. High-ranking relatives of the poet, among whom was his uncle, the general and ruler of the accident Grigol Orbeliani, did not help him; During his lifetime, the poet could not even be printed. Is it a thought that he in his most, perhaps, high, light and sad poems would speak about relatives? Hardly.

Interest (6 stanza):

Mogile my ever

Waste fog ,

Let him be sacrificed

Light [glow] blue sky!

Translation (6 stanza):

Accuracy Indicator: 20%, Volost Indicator: 77.8%

Final poem. Interest and version of the translator diluted, if you can put it, 180 degrees. Literally. Baratashvili understands: His name will be forgotten descendants, but he hopes that the beam should think, God's beam displays the misty dusk over his grave - for the unrequited love of the poet to the blue, azure height, turquoise infinity. Not a significant part of speech, particle let be. She confirms the assumption that this poem is a kind of prayer. The poet, confident in all the heavens, in his coming dissolution in the Creator's lazori, is not sure of any earthly, so he sacrifice himself with all the earth for Heaven. Moreover. He brings his barely sacrifice of unearthly eternity, where he can become free of his spirit, oppressed by the hopelessness of existence. Pasternak not only covers the grave of the poet blue , but nehust, ineem , but also pounces size winter smoke - The smoke of oblivion - in the name of the brilliant author of "blue".

For Baratashvili Sinese - exclusively in the altitudes inaccessible for the mortal body, on the very top of the universe, Pasternaku is still where: in pure bags or on sinful land hiding the ashes of the Great Poet. Baratashvili in his poem rises upwards - from the ground to heaven - and from there observes what is happening in the secret hope that his spiritual component, its essence will not be forgotten. Pasternak in the translation is firmly standing on Earth, translating his gaze from the azure heavens to the dead tombstone, tightly draped by double waterfront, and smoke, over which no power - even Divine - Syneva. Bratashvili creates almost spiritual poem, Pasternak is frankly lyric. It became, he completely disretered sacrifice from the last stanza for the sake of the second, for it did not bother to remember it to the final of the translated poem. The translator was not before: pushing away from the text of a unlucky Georgian poet, he created his own artwork on his own topic. Dry numbers are told about it. The accuracy of the entire translation: 37.5% (oscillations: from 66.7 to 11.1), the frequency indicator of the entire translation: 62.5% (oscillations: from 44.4 to 85.7).

Without counting the original script, Pasternak initially changed the formal features of the translated poem. The original Bratashvili is written by Logaad, a complex size combining the Dactyl and Korea. But this kind of difficulty is not needed by Pasternak, and he arbitrarily changes Logaad on standard Korea, which is not a crime in the practice of this translator. (Although the reasoning about the metric of the Georgian poemy is beyond the competence of the author of these lines, make sure that the translator did not adhere to the metric canvance of the original, did not make much difficulty.) In addition, Pasternak, reflecting on what is blue for a lyrical subject, applied to The translation of the lexical anaphor: seven strings The translation author starts by a particle (bundle) "this", which is not in the source text and in risen. As a result, the translation, starting with the third stanza, resembles a kind of register of essential features of blue. Of course, thoughts about it come to mind only when comparing the translation with the original, in itself the work of Pasternak does not cause such sensations, but in this article I just talk about the relationship between the source text with its transcription.

Thus, to translate as such, the work of Pasternak does not have virtually no relationship. Moreover. It is an indicative illustration of how poems should not be translated. Pasternakovsky text is not even translating, not retelling and not transferred by the original. "Blue color" Pasternak has to evaluate two: as the original poem there is no price; As a translation of the poem of Bratashvili, it simply does not exist - no matter how paradoxically this statement. If Pasternak called his text, say, "blue color (memory of Nikolozhe Baratashvili)", - it would remove all the coming questions. But he calls his poems by transfer, clearly understanding that this is no translation ...

Information that Pasternak, to put it mildly, did not quite adequately interpreted the "blue color" of Bratashvili, she climbed me for a long time, 20-25 years ago. I remember some book, the characters of which, Georgians, reasoned on this topic. Looking towards the translation manner of Pasternak, the advantages of which is all that, but not careful attitude to the original, I wanted to get acquainted with a stunning "blue" as short as possible, preferably at the stitch level. Over time, I received an insurmountable desire to translate this poem.

Last year, on one of the literary sites, I accidentally discovered poetess poetess Irina Sannadze. I wrote her a letter with the statement of my request for a confront of the poem of Bratashvili, and she responded to my happiness. Accurate on the eve of Orthodox Christmas I received not only the original poem and his sign up, but also translite; Having considered it, I set some formal features of the "blue color". To penetrate the original text, I had to learn for some time unusual for the Russian human sounding, but in the end I won't say, I learned, "but the original original sound with the fantastic sound, I want to lead entirely.

As it was possible to install, the formal component of the "blue color" (except for identical in all sizes) was least interested in his ingenious author. The first three stanzas are written by two-oops, the second three - with the help of cross-reefs. About Rhymes had to think about. The second two-perceivers of the first and second stanza turned out to be unimposed, in the fourth stubborn, Krestradi, connecting the second and fourth lines, was not completely accurate, and in the fifth stubborn, the first and third poems were not rhyme. How to translate? On the one hand, there was a temptation to save the original rhymepole, on the other - there is a text of a parsnik with absolutely accurate rhymes. And the fact that my translation will be compared with Pasternakovsky, pre-giving the palm of the championship to the classics, not subject to doubt. And since Pasternak, who flipping the "blue color", handed over Kraisguracy accurately, had to admit the slack, that is, to translate the same as he.

And last. The translation of Bratashvili's favorite poem is a kind of low bow to Georgia, which was my home without a small two years, when I served in the ranks of the Soviet army. Until now, my memory keeps the names of the villages (Patars Lilo, Dili Lilo, Varketyli); Awesome Georgian hospitality (by the rural holiday to us, soldiers, it was impossible to pass: we got and fed); Inimitable feast, when the hop is not as much from a magnificent wine, how much from the festive connection of the shower. There was a unique delicacy - Lavash with grapes, when an extra festive was in the skinny wallet. There were also raids on the vineyards when gardeners, causing us there, not only did not take the already collected in Sidora, but also added a drawer from ourselves ("Soldiers, you just don't. Come, ask - we will give!"). There were also unauthorized abuse in Tbilisi's handsome, where, despite citizens (Civilian clothes), they still recognized the soldiers and allowed everywhere without a queue. There were funicular flyingat Mtazmond, and visiting the grave of Griboyedov, and a lot more, about what you never forget ...

In pure azure color,

in the original light,

in blue supreme tone

i love with youth.

But when my dust

in the veins almost cooled

i am with any other

in color incompatible.

Roads to me for a long time

eye turquoise eyes;

the sky is awesome

Classic translation B. Pasternak

Sky color blue color
I loved from the small years.
In childhood he meant
Blue and blue began.

And now, when reached
I am the tops of my days
Sacrificing the rest of the colors
Blue will not give

It is beautiful without sticks -
This is the color of your favorite eyes,
This is a bottomless look,
Dead blue.

This is the color of my dreams,
This is a height paint.
In this blue solution
Immersed by earth spacious

This is a slight transition
In suspense from worries
And from crying relatives
At your funeral.

This is blue Nehons

This is a sysy winter smoke
Molly over my name.

And now, when reached
I am the tops of my days
Sacrificing the rest of the colors
Blue will not give.

Translation M. Dudina

Blue color, heavenly light,
Sky blue hello
Named, unearthly
Since childhood, shines.

And now when cooled
Hearts experienced fervor
In loyalty before blue
I reject the color of other.

I catch love in love
Xin I love
Light cloud of miracles
In the world that came down from heaven.

And the dream of earthly worries
Blue cherished calls
So that love shone there
With blue light in half.

Instead of tears of relatives - on dust
On my funeral
Sky blue dew
My eyes will come to my eyes.

Life burned down
The sacrificial will hobble
And leave a light mark
In the blue sky blue color.

This grip zenith:
Merge safe with him
Blue my color.

There is no cold, not fear, -
Blue color in the clouds.
Where the eternal smell -
Everywhere Milky Blue ...

Let in foggy silence
Where the eternal peace
Spring Soul Speed
Will ascended home!

Translation Y. Lifshitsa

In pure azure color,
in the original light,
in blue supreme tone
i love with youth.

But when my dust
in the veins almost cooled
i am with any other
in color incompatible.

Roads to me for a long time
eye turquoise eyes;
the sky is awesome
he gets happiness.

Mentally attract my
duma me on the ether
where, dissolving in love,
in the mountain strengthened sapphire.

Hardly a tear native
my sprinkle outcome
but on me dew
sky azure Space.

Moom over the hill
stand up but let her
will be like sacrifices smoke
in the sky is ascended!

Translation of Lifshitsa and good, and accurate - one trouble: no one will read it. Since this is not poetry. Poetry undevelopment, no matter how much Nabokov's sense would try to translate it. If the musician- "classic" suggest playing chopin on a pipe, he will refuse - or will play nonsense. And jazzman will play if Schopin is infected. Pasternak - infected and wrote his. Who needs poetry, read Pasternak. And the literary critic, of course, is better than Livvitz - but even better, nevertheless is the original. By the way, after Livshitsa read the original I do not want - and after Pasternak, yes.

"My Prayer" (film about Baratashvili)

Baratashvili consider the second in the meaning of Georgian national (poet after the author "Vityaz in Tiger Skur".

Life was short (27 years old - like his friend Lermontov). And full charts and tests.

The poetic heritage of Nikolozhe Baratashvili includes 36 lyrical poems and the historical poem "Fate of Georgia".

For the first time, several poems of Bratashvili were published only seven years after his death.

The magnificent dancer, while studying in the Tiflis Noble School, falling from the stairs, Baratashvili injured his leg. The incurable chromoty prevented to enter military service, although he passionately dreamed of a military career. It was not possible to continue to continue education at the university: the only feeder in the family, he was forced to enroll in the judicial office on the expedition of the court and reprisals to a modest official.

The tragedy of his life was unhappy love by Princess Ekaterina Chavchavadze, the daughter of the famous poet of Prince Alexander Gersevanovich Chavchavadze and the native sister of Nina Griboedova-Chavchavadze.

Interestingly, when Lermontov dedicated poems by the Government of Megrelia Ekaterina Aleksandrovna Chavchavadze-Dadiani He also wrote about the color of her eye:

Like heaven, your gaze shines
Enamel blue
How a kiss sounds and melts
Your voice is young;

For the sound one magical speech,
For your single look
I am glad to give handsome sash,
Georgian Bulat;

And he sometimes shine sweetly,
And sweetly sounds
With sound, the soul trembles
And in the heart, blood is boiling.

She sings - and the sounds of melting,
As kisses on lips,
Looks - and heaven play
In her divine eyes;

Whether - all its movements,
Il polvit the word - all the features
So full feelings, expressing,
So full of maturity.

"Blue color" Nikoloza Baratashvili translated Boris Pasternak
Reads Boris Pasternak

Russian poet Boris Leonidovich Pasternak was born on January 29 (February 10 N.St.) 1890 in Moscow and died on 30 May 1960 in Peredelkin from lung cancer. All his life was seventy years old, three months and twenty days.

The poem "Blue" (in the original - without a name), written by N. Bratashvili in 1841 and translated by B. Pasternak no later than 1938, has long been already in Russia a kind of business card of the genius Georgian poet. At the thought of it in memory, the lines "the color of heaven, blue color / loved, from the small years, spontaneously arise. Few people can remember other poems of Baratashvili, but the "blue color" knows all the fans of Russian poetry. Until Pasternak, this poem into Russian shifted V. Gaprindashvili, whose translation saw the light in 1922 in the then Tiflis and, of course, could not walk before the Russian public. In Georgia, Pasternakovsky translation (others, as I know, it is simply no) is known to be quite widely, however, the attitude towards it is not so tremendous than in Russia, but more jealous and preiss.
Maybe someone will seem not entirely correct to someone, but I intend to make a kind of experience: to compare the translation of Pasternak with a stranger (practically literal) infringement, made at my request by the poetess I.Sadzez, because I can not boast the knowledge of the Georgian language myself.
